Trevin Wax on Everyday Myths In Light of the Gospel

April 24, 2018

8:30am – 1:00pm

  • April 24, 2018 |8:30am – 1:00pm

Many Christians feel bombarded by the messages they hear and the trends they see in our rapidly changing world.

How can help out people resist being conformed to the pattern of this world? What does faithfulness to Christ look like in the cultural winds of Los Angeles? How can we be true to the gospel in a world where myths and false visions of the world so often prevail?

Join us for our Spring event to explore these issues with Trevin Wax (author of This Is Our Time). By analyzing our common beliefs and practices (smartphone habits, entertainment intake, and our views of shopping, sex, marriage, politics, and life’s purpose), Trevin will help us see through the myths of society to the hope of the gospel, and help us shepherd our people towards clarity in unclear times.

We've worked to make this event free for members and non-members, and we hope you'll carve out time to be with us!

Schedule:

  • Welcome, Singing, and Refreshments

  • Message 1: A Snapshot of North American Culture and Christianity
What trends and topics are we facing as church leaders on mission in 21st century North America? What do we need to know about our context, how people view the world, the church, and God? What trends are impacting church attendance, views on personal happiness, sexual morality, and politics? What are the good signs and bad signs in this current cultural moment? In this session, Trevin Wax will take us through some statistics and surveys that shine light on the state of the culture in which we do ministry.

  • Short break for refreshments

  • Message 2: Seeing Longings and Seeing Through Lies with the Light of the Gospel
In a world in which people are inclined to see the purpose of life as "being true to oneself," how can we minister in a way that speaks to the longings of people while pointing out the cultural lies that would lead them away from joy in God? In this session, we examine some of the myths that people believe and how we can equip believers to see longings, see through lies, and bring the hope of the gospel to our world.

  • Break for lunch

  • Q & A
